Selected students from Grade 5 and 4 visited Radio Indigo, Bangalore’s upbeat Western music radio Station, for A VERY SPECIAL REASON. Accompanied by Mr Ravi and Ms Sandra they recorded the HAPPY BIRTHDAY song to be aired on Radio Indigo’s 5th birthday on Monday, 19^th September.

The Indigo Kids as they have been christened are: Pradyun Singh, Varun Ramakrishnan,Ananyaa Bharadwaj, Rivka Aarons,and Armani Vikram.

Inventure raises funds for Terry Fox and cancer research

Fourth and Fifth graders were inspired and motivated by the true life story of a young boy who after having had his right leg amputated from bone cancer, decided to raise money for cancer research by running a marathon a day across the country on one leg! They were able to raise Rs.38,000 and a few students even attended the Terry Fox Run : a 5 km walk, jog, run for Cancer at Kanteerava Stadium Sunday, 18th September 2011.

How to get your kid to read: Advice from an eleven-year old

I learnt to love reading when I was barely three. My mother taught me how to read, not with flash cards or fancy CDs, but by reading Dr Seuss’s Cat in the Hat and Go Dog Go every single day. I loved Cat in the Hat because of the funny drawings, and for some reason I also liked the cat’s springy, stripy top hat! Then I learnt to read and my poor mother had to hear me reading Sue Likes Blue all day long.

Reading is very special to me. When I get grounded, it’s not ‘No TV for two weeks!’ or ‘Absolutely no computer for one month!’ but ‘No reading for the rest of the day!’ And when I don’t read, I get very, very cranky.

Reading can take you to magical, fantasy places like Narnia and Hogwarts. When I’m bored, all I have to do is pick up a book. There are new adventures and new sights to see and explore. I mean, when I’m reading a good book, it’s almost like it’s real!

My favourite books are Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series. When I first read them, I couldn’t put them down. For instance, take the first line of Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian: “The end of the world started when a Pegasus landed on the hood of my car.” How could you not keep reading? This series helped me learn about Greek mythology in a fun way. What I like most about his writing is that he is sarcastic, suspenseful and funny.

The fights are more exciting than any computer game, and often the bad guys win. Most computer games are all the same; you shoot or punch people, you win, and they die. But every book is different in some way or the other. Even when I have read my favourite books a hundred times, I keep reading my favourite parts again and again.

Do you want your kids to enjoy reading just as much as I do? Here are some of the reasons why I think kids don’t read:

Television: Of course, you guessed it! Some kids in my class watch TV for three hours or more a day. Making a set time for TV will make a huge difference. My mom only lets me watch TV after 6.30 pm.

Gadgets: I also don’t own any electronics. Sometimes you have to be tough and say NO to the requests for Wiis, iPods and laptops. My friends have all sorts of things but when I asked my mother, she told me to read a book instead. When my friends ask me why I don’t have an iPod, I just tell them that I read instead. They are so surprised that they are struck speechless.

Not cool: Half of the boys I know think reading is ‘uncool’. When one of the students did a book report and won a prize for it, the other boys teased him about being a loser until he finally gave up reading for good, just to be part of the ‘cool club’. Sometimes other girls call me a bookworm, but I just ignore them. Encourage your kids to stand up to people like that. Reading is one of the coolest things ever.

So boring: These days reading is a chore, something that has to be done, like eating vegetables or doing homework. Don’t use flash cards or give long lectures about the importance of reading but make reading amusing and fun. One way to do it is to form a book club for your kid with one of their friends. Reading with a friend is always great fun.

Parents who don’t read: Let your kids see you read. While parents are nagging their children to read more, they are watching hours of TV. So read in front of your kid and maybe they will try to copy you.

Finally, sometimes kids don’t read because they don’t know what to read. Here is a list of my top 10 favourite books that most children my age will enjoy.

So you see, it’s not that hard for anyone to love reading. Sometimes when a book is really exciting, I even read in the bath (which always ends up with the book soggy and the bathroom flooded). So be warned… Once someone starts to read, they can’t be stopped!

We went to Fabindia for a composting workshop organized by Daily Dump.We began by playing a game in which there were many cards on a mat and we had to guess and pair them up, insect to insect. It was kind of fun and interesting.

After that the staff showed us some bottles and inside the bottles were composters such as centipedes, flies, spiders, maggots, earthworms and ants.

Then they told us to look around Fabindia looking for junk with red bindis on it and we found bottles, glass, packets, batteries, fruit peels and paper plates. After finding these they asked us to put it in the dustbin and then segregate the junk into different dustbins which were marked biodegradable and non biodegradable.

After that they explained the concept of how every living thing basically gets its energy from the sun and then they gave us some booklets to read, of which some were based on water, some on air and some on electromagnetic waves. Thus ended our Daily Dump session for that day.

We learnt a lot that day. What we call junk and rubbish is treasure for the insects, and they help in decomposing biodegradable rubbish to rich compost, that helps plants grow organically without any use of chemical. Our family decided to adopt composting too!

Nooraine’ s winning ways

It is not every edupreneur and CEO that has to her credit a series of wins, that too on various golf courses scattered over the world! Sharing news of these wins is a matter of pride for the whole Inventure community!

Colorful feathers in Nooraine’s Golf cap are

- Turnberry Cup, Scotland (team of four, including Anirban, ranked top 5 in India)

- Callaway Tournament, KGA (individual Trophy)

- Toyota (team of four). Competed as one of 120 teams!

- Won one longest drive and 2 closest to the pin awards at two of the above tournaments

- Member of a team of 12 which has qualified for the south zone finals of the Touche Gang wars. 1600 golfers across India participating

- Represented the wining team from India in the “Race to Ireland”, at the Irish open pro am with Jeev Millka Singh as her partner.

Inventure Academy is reckoned to be a formidable name in school sports. There is no doubt that students here draw their inspiration from their CEO, Nooraine Fazal. From her spirit, encouragement and zeal they imbibe her desire for winning and her pursuit to win. Sports can be very serious business and not mere recreation, our teams have discovered.

Inventure Academy’s Alisha dances for a cause

Alisha Kalyanpur, a student of grade 9 at Inventure Academy recently performed at a Bharatanatyam dance performance to raise funds for the People 4 People foundation, a Whitefield-based NGO which puts up playgrounds in government schools in Bangalore, among its other activities.

Titled ‘Dance for a Cause’, the program was held at the Jagriti Theater in Whitefield on 21 August 2011 , Alisha performed the sinuous Krishna padam as a solo, and a resounding foot-tapping Thillana along with her co-dancers. The grand finale was titled Sadbhavana, a fusion dance performed to musical compositions by Mozart, Benjamin Britten, AR Rahman, Bryan Adams and Michael Jackson. The last piece of this, danced to the melody of “Heal the World” brought the entire audience to its feet and tears to many eyes.

The show was a sellout and raised over Rs 5 lakh.

Mihir Bhaskar shines for Inventure Academy

Mihir Bhaskar does Inventure Academy proud with his stellar performance in the Cambridge IGCSE examinations – he achieved 7 A Stars (distinction!) and here is what he had to say: “I was actually rather shocked when I first heard about my results. It took me a while to digest the fact that I had done so well! At first I thought that there was surely some error, but as things began to set in, the satisfaction and relief of several months of hard work and effort finally paying off was simply incomparable to anything else!”

Mihir is not only a top class student; he is also accomplished on the guitar, played football for the school and is well liked by his peers.

Inventure Academy Student Council REACHES OUT for Child Rights

Reach [Out]:The ISCL or Inter Student Council League (Inventure Academy is one of the four schools who comprise this group initiative), in association with CRY(Child relief and You) held a massive fundraising event on 27^thAugust 2011 at UB CITY.

Inventure academy was at the forefront, taking the lead in the entertainment programme, in organising the printing, sale and collection of tickets and programmes. The Student Council executive members former and newly elected were everywhere that evening, in a busy helpful mode and deserve much appreciation for their talent and commitment to the Cause.

The programme titled ‘Reach Out’ opened to a short play on the “Rights of the Child”, as students of Inventure Academy depicted scenes of child labour and what more fortunate children could do about such problems. This was followed by our band and singers who sang 2 beautiful songs including “Sweet Child of Mine”. The applause was most gratifying.

“Tarantismo”, Arati Punwani’s( who produced and directed Muse-i-cal Magic @ Inventure last year) dance company, took our collective breaths away by a creative ballet for 5 couples.

In the next half hour while we waited in the amphitheatre for the Rock concert to begin, the anticipation and excitement was palpable!! To begin this part of the evening students from Mallya Aditi International School sang a song.

Then, with a powerful impact Allegro Fudge, the band tuned us in to the real business of listening and throbbing to the beat of their music. This rock band, comprising old Cottonians, truly captured our senses and everyone was on their feet, arms waving in the air!

In sharp contrast, but equal in mastery came a solo performance by Bangalore’s famed guitarist, Konarak Reddy. What an opportunity to let the music overtake those of us of the GenNext, who are addicted to higher decibel levels and more powered rythms. The music melted into its rhythmic motifs of fused melodies of East and west, it soothed and enchanted us almost into a trance!

After Konark left the stage and his audience in rapt admiration of his skills and sensitivity, came the piece de resistance of the evening! Parikrama, the band from Delhi was celebrating its anniversary and were doing this with us! What an impact! What power! What vibrations! 90 solid minutes of hits had this audience singing, dancing and enjoying being taken by storm!

As the gig came to a close, the audience yelled, “One more! Just one more!”

They mesemerised us with their talent, but their whole-hearted participation helped ISCL raise over Rs 7 lakhs for CRY and their work for underserved children.

What a blast! But what a great success for the first endeavour of ISCL. Inventure, well done, for being at the helm of this good work! There's more to come, more to look forward to…

Inventure's Adil wins Under 12 singles tennis title at National Interschool Tounament at Monfort school

Adil Kalyanpur, a grade 6 student of Inventure Academy won the Under 12 singles tennis title at the National interschool tournament at Montfort school at Yercaud this weekend. Around 128 students from across 90 schools took part in the sports tournament. Adil played seven rounds to win.

Asked what was his motivation behind the success and he said, “I didn’t do it for myself, I did it for my school-Inventure Academy!!”

Inventure Academy held its first ever Model United Nations(MUN) on its campus last week and Ms. Sudha Subbharaman, one of the pioneers of MUN, Bangalore was the chief guest.

MUN provides an opportunity for students to tackle global issues and find solutions to the most pressing international issues that we face as a global community. ‘Diplomacy’ is the watchword for any debating exercise. The best Delegate award for the session was given to Nischal Nadhamuni.

MUN is a platform for students to develop and practice their skills in research, debate, and negotiation, which helps them come back with a greater understanding of the world's problems and the diverse perspectives that can help solve them.

'Transforming trash to cash is a eco-friendly lesson for everyone'

Your trash is our cash. Inventure Academy students learnt about how to do it from the Business unit for women in JanakiRam layout, Kamanahalli, Bangalore who make beautiful handbags with discarded tetra packs and earn livelihood.

A 3D project started by the Centre for Social Action wing of Christ University aims to make empowerment desirable for the women by making them dynamic in their development.

“The women purchase the used tetra packs from the garbage unit at Rs 6 per kg. We then cut each packet, wash it with hot water and then with a disinfectant. The packs are then let to dry. Colorful strips are then cut out and woven exquisitely to produce beautiful carry bags” said the Kala the director of the unit.

Inventure boy stars in 'Lessons in forgetting' an adaptation of Anita Nair's book

Who wouldn't want to be in a movie? Not me! So after a couple of auditions for ‘Lessons in forgetting’ , an adaptation from the book of Anita Nair, when I found out that I was selected for the role of Nikhil, I was as extremely excited! This was going to be awesome! The catch? It was during my final exams.

In other words, my mom made sure I studied way in advance, because we both knew that there would be no time later on.

‘Lessons in forgetting’ is English language Indian themed films made for global audience for whom communication of complex thoughts and feelings is easier in English than any other.

The scenes were all in Bangalore but they weren’t exactly close by, so we had to get up really early, and sometimes sleep late as well. (I was so excited that I got up earlier than needed, which meant by the end of the shoot/exams I was really tired.)

Of course, after the original excitement, on the first day, I was really nervous. I had no idea what to expect. Luckily for me, the cast and crew were really nice, and I had a lot of fun with them.

Time went on, and so did exams. My favourite day was on the 1st of April, April Fools Day. Why? Because they were shooting a car accident scene and we got to break the car’s glass! They also put sugar (for the glass pieces) and made the engine smoke. I also got to talk to one of the makeup artists (yes, I had to wear makeup) and he told me how to make different kinds of realistic fake blood.

In short, I had tons of fun, and even though it was during my final exams, I’m glad I did it. Definitely. (Plus I learned a lot!).

Family, friends, Inventurers and distinguished invitees attended the Bharatnatya Arangetram of our very own Namrata Ramesh (of grade 8) on July 2nd 2011. Wonder and pride on a brilliant display of this classical dance form was the prevailing mood of the evening, where our CEO and Managing Trustee Nooraine, was Chief guest along with Mr R Ashok, Minister for Transport and Mr.ST Ramesh, IGP of Karnataka.

Namrata has been trained and guided by Guru Kanya Ramchandran Tayaliya since the tender age of 7 and is a multi-talented girl who paints , reads avidly and writes with much interest and skill. Passionate about this classical dance form from south India, she wants to become an astronomer! Behind this great performance was hard and regular practice, determination and strength to present this vast repertoire that is required of each dancer who aspires to be presented by her guru to the public in her debut stage performance . “ Arangetram” a Tamil word comes from “aranga” or stage and “etram” means to climb.

We congratulate Namrata, her parents, Mrs. Sowmya and Mr Tiger Ramesh on this important milestone in her journey of learning, performing and wowing so many of us!

The Duke TIP Experience:Entrepreneurial Leadership

I'm going to share with you, my experience of taking the entrepreneurial leadership course at the Duke TIP summer studies program 2011.

I chose to take this course because:

1.) It some thing that schools in India usually don't offer for students of my age ( but that holds true for all the other courses offered as well)

2.) I always had a passion for business (it runs in the family) and leadership, and as soon as I heard I knew I had made my decision.

Now, some of you might be wondering who an entrepreneur is, and what is the true definition of a leader. Well, there are many ways to look at it, but here's my understanding:

An entrepreneur is someone, who can cross reference/meet the needs of the community with resources, and therefore makes some amount of profit ( not necessarily money). In other words, He/she can create value in the community profitably (value propositions).

A leader is someone who can make the right decisions, through good analysis ( strategy – MECE list of criteria), good communication skills, creativity and emotional intelligence ( not getting “married” to one idea). He/she should also be able to to reach/define success as well as, help lead his/her team towards it by looking at core competencies and by alining agendas ( the incorporation of goals and team members in the milestone and vision of the company).

During my three weeks at the Mysore Infosys campus, I learnt a lot. It was one of the best three weeks of my life. I chose the course entrepreneurial leadership, in which I learnt how to create a good business plan and lead and manage a team towards success. During my first week there we learnt the basics of creating a business plan, the aspects, such as marketing,operations and finance, the general business styles, other leadership skills and styles etc... All through the second week, we put our knowledge to test. We had an elevator pitch competition, in which we had to make power points and present it in front of a guest audience who acted as venture capitalists. Later, we had to create a business plan of about 35 – 45 slides on the same business venture. Finally, in the third week, we revised our skills by doing a project with the java team. Where we marketed a video game prototype that they created. This experience not only enhance my knowledge, but also taught me the way to look at it. To look at it in a structured and systematic manner.

For example, value propositions. My dad and I were pondering over the thought the other day, and we came to the conclusion that many IT biggies don't survive in the market for that long because they have very narrow value propositions ( niches). Take, Microsoft for instance, they're facing some stiff competition, why?? Because, if you look at their value proposition it is to create an operating system itself. These companies are not flexible as they have product or service – based value propositions.

On the other hand, IBM recently celebrated their 100th anniversary. They are an outsourcing company, that change with the market (time), they are very flexible company that provide systems and services.

Overall, I enjoyed the experience thoroughly!! And I am hoping I can attend again!!!!

School scribes closely scrutinize the student leaders prior to voting

Ananya's speech was very good. She was a bit nervous in the beginning but soon got used to speaking and spoke the rest with a lot of confidence and was very calm. She spoke about her logo which was a light bulb inside the sun. She said she chose it because ‘the sun represents warmth and light and the light bulb represents great ideas, inventions and efforts’.

She said she would help the house participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities; she would be kind and encourage everyone to make sure no one was left out. She was very believable and she had convinced the audience.

She got a great ovation. The audience asked her some difficult questions but she answered them well. For example, when someone asked what would she do if she was Vice captain, she replied that she and the captain would work together as a great team as it was the house’s victory that was more important. I think she deserves to be elected as she came across as someone who would stand by her promises.

Adrien appeared to be a confident candidate from the Blue House (Venturers), in my opinion second best among the Blue House candidates. He made a number of promises, the ones that I captured were

– that he would be kind to everyone

– he would give everyone a fair chance to participate in house events

– he would try to lead Blue house to victory.

He started off well and with confidence, but then lost audience interest because he just read from the paper, without making any eye contact with them. Expressions from the speech were also somewhat missing. Being one of the last few candidates to give his speech, it was but natural that the audience was tired and impatient. He could have sustained the interest of the audience by being livelier. He got almost the same number and kind of questions as the other candidates. Adrian answered all the questions extremely well.

On a scale of 1-5, I would rate Adrien’s speech at 2.5

Q1. Was the candidate nervous?

I could sense that Sanjana was nervous, but she did a good job by not exhibiting it. She looked quite confident and calm. She was not fiddling with anything, unlike some other candidates. In fact, she was composed. She spoke her lines very clearly and did not get stuck anywhere while making her speech.

Q2. Did the candidate convince the audience enough?

Well, her speech was very short, not giving enough points to convince the audience. So, I feel she may not have she convinced the audience enough. The audience was not looking that satisfied with her speech.

Sanjana didn’t get a standing ovation but many people clapped for her. When people asked her questions she gave a sensible answer. For example, when people asked her what her logo meant she had a meaningful explanation for it and said she will help everyone shoot up and shine.

He could not convince most of his audience he was reluctant to answer questions. His strategies to bring his house to victory were good & but he wasn’t convincing enough. He did not get much applause from the audience. He put in a fair amount of effort to campaign but could have campaigned better.

A new academic session at Inventure Academy does not start with books, uniforms or in classrooms but with Inventuring - a unique foundation program aimed at cementing bonds between teachers and students, making new students comfortable and setting the key note for expectations at Inventure Academy.

Students engage in projects – both single and in groups – and experience first hand, the creative process, thinking-out- of- the- box and being active participants in a team. The hidden agenda is helping students realize their inner potential, making them believe in themselves, understanding ways of true learning and respecting interdependence.

Designed on Howard Gardener’s theory of Multiple Intelligences and Inventure’s core values , the 2011-12 ‘Inventuring’ starts with a daily schedule of students participating in four broad categories- Outdoor, Classroom Projects, Choice Time and Golden Time.

During Inventuring, each day started with an outdoor activity, like dance or sports, to kick-start mental and physical agility and facilitating team bonding. This was followed with classroom projects based on exploring Multiple Intelligences (MI) of students.

The classroom projects on multiple intelligences had larger themes like Creative Sparks, Think-a thon under which students were tasks specific to their grades.

Inventure Academy celebrates Ancient Civilisations

Can you name the civilization that used silk as its currency? Were you aware that the Chinese civilization was the first to use paper money? Would you believe that Egyptians used two sticks joined together as a compass to get geographic directions?

Inventure Academy on Saturday celebrated “Ancient Civilizations week” by showcasing the students’ extensive learning on the evolution and history of mankind.

The event which had participation of all students from grade 1 to 5, hence named ‘vertical project’ chose Early Man, Stone Age, Harappa, Mesopotamian, Indus Valley, Ancient China and Egyptian civilizations to showcase.

It involved a month of extensive research, brainstorming for the best of ideas and exploring interesting ways to present it.

“The learning opportunities were many as we learnt everything about the civilization our class was to present, from culture, geography, social practices, inventions to the contribution of each civilizations to mankind,” says Karan Buntval, a grade 5 student, whose class worked on Egyptian civilization.

“Reliving history is impossible but students experienced it through this project by exploring and researching extensively about the theme,” says Sambit Basu, a parent of Grade 1.

“Even the get up of the classrooms, their costumes, and the food they served was woven in the theme for them to roll back time, and my child enjoyed it. The icing on the cake was the cultural program which gave an overview of history of mankind in a very entertaining way,” he adds.

“The learning at Inventure Academy is open ended and dynamic both for the teacher and the taught and the presentations on Ancient Civilizations was just an example,” says Principal of Inventure Academy, Mallika Sen.

Inventure Academy raises Rs 80,000 for Camlin School boy

Inventure Academy students were touched by a recent report in a newspaper daily on Aditya, a grade 10 student of Camlin School suffering from Guillain Barre Syndrome, a rare form of progressive muscle dystrophy.

What was even more unique was the attitude of his friends, who were knocking each door possible to raise funds to save the life of Aditya over their board exams.

“We too wanted to do be of some help to Aditya hence started a fund raising campaign in school under the guidance of our teacher Anuradha mam,” says Anika Desai, Grade 5 student.

For the campaign to be successful, our class put posters on the notice board spreading awareness about Aditya and disease he was suffering from. “We also went to each classroom reminding the students to contribute towards the cause,” says Karan Buntval, also a grade 5 student.

The school successfully raised Rs 83,000 in around a week! The fund raised was handed over to the parents, which eventually went for his treatment.

Inventure Academy students win `Best Robot Design' at Lego League

Inventure Academy students were at their creative best at the First Lego League Tournament 2010 and won the award for "Best Robot Design, a robot designing competition held at tech-major SAP Labs on Saturday 29th January.

‘Robomaniacs’ as they called themselves chose ‘Slipped disc' as their theme. The team comprised of three students from Inventure Academy namely Karan Buntval of Grade 5, Tejas Rao and Pranav Jai Singh of Grade 8.

The competition was open to children aged between 9-16 and work in teams which could have a maximum of ten members. The teams were given special kits by SAP Labs. The kits contained Lego bricks, programmable processors, sensors and motors using which a robot can be built to accomplish predefined missions and a specially designed mat on which all the action takes place.

Robomaniacs', had seven participants in the age group of 9-14. Karan Buntval, a 5th standard student of Inventure Academy, felt the tournament was an exciting opportunity to learn and have fun at the same time. "We were under no pressure and we had a lot of fun and it was exciting to work in a team and coordinate on different aspects of the project", he said.

Karan says that ‘Robomaniacs' used an ultrasonic, light and touch sensor, and 3 motors to build the robot. The sensors and the motors were all fixed in their position, but one motor was left to change the attachments for the different tasks. "Our robot was stable but slow, we are definitely looking forward to the next edition of FLL and we will improve our design", adds Karan.

Inventure Academy students won the Sub Juniors VIVA Cup in a basketball tournament by beating the host school Vibgyor High 14-2. The tournament was conducted in Vibgyor on January 31st 2011.

The team comprised of Anjali Kapadia, Shrishti Vyas, Armani Vikram, Asha Sarvanan, Pratusha, Sanjana Bakre, Melini Kallar, Shreya Guntunoor, Roshini Sethil Kumar, Ashna Parekh and Tanvi Amba.

If Mathematics is the queen of science, then arithemetic is the queen of mathematics, which underlines the fundamental importance of arithmetic in all of science. But the role of arithmetic goes way beyond science or engineering or technology and indeed encompasses the whole of human life.

Nihaal George, a grade 7student of Inventure Academy made us proud by standing first in the Titan Genius Kidz National Arithmetic Competition, statewide. The School Level Results are as follows:

Challenges excite students of Inventure Academy and I am no exception. I was eagerly waiting for the South Zone Junior / Sub Junior Open Golf Tour, held at Trivandrum Golf Club, Kawdiar held from December 17th to 19th 2010.

The trip was great and the experience enriching as the golf course was very tricky and challenging. The icing on the cake was my win in Cat B (U- 15) and Cat A-B (U-18). While I stood 1st South Zone Sub Junior category, I secured 2nd Runners up position in South Zone Junior category.

My scores were as follows:

Sleep- Why tennis players need it by Dr Sunita Maheshwari

How often do tennis players do 500 rallies, 1000 skips, 200 serves and then come home and watch TV until midnight? And then wake up in 5 hours to begin the routine all over again ?

How often have you 'crashed all day' on a holiday 'making up your sleep'?

Sleep is one of the most under-studied, undervalued. Kids fight it, teenagers feel they don't need it, adults are so busy handling the stresses of life that they don't use it either.is used to help muscles grow.

Anabolic hormones such as growth hormones are secreted preferentially during sleep which help with overall growth. Tennis players need to grow...height for serve, muscle mass for stroke power. So, sleep is of the essence.

Interestingly, children who get enough sleep also find it easier to focus on school work. Their memory tends to be better, they grasp concepts faster. All this for tennis players is essential as they have limited time periods in which to do homework and school work catch up.
Interestingly too much sleep is also hazardous and there appears to be an ideal number of hours of sleep that one needs.

Recent studies in adults, publicised in the medical community, have shown that 7-8 hours of sleep reduces blood pressure. Interestingly people who are sleep deprived take time losing weight..

So start puuting your kids( and yourself) to sleep early. You will need to stop TV by 7 pm (you can turn it on once they have slept!!) and change your lifestyle to be able to give them their dinner earlier. If they haven't completed their homework, keep it for the morning.

Don't try to teach them at 10 pm, they will not retain anything and will just land up being sleep deprived leading to further lack of concentration the next morning.

On school nights:

1)Feed your kids dinner early ie by 7-7.30 pm, have them wash their feet and brush their teeth

2) Lights and TV and all noise except soft soothing music off by 8-8.30pm.

3) A nice oil leg message may help in-duce the zzzzzzzzzzz time or a cosy

cuddle in bed!

Through this process we have encouraged the children to experiment, encouraged them to enjoy and tonight, we encourage them to excel!

If this production started out as a blank canvas, the painting you will see on stage today has been plotted, painted and perfected by each child bringing their own special colour to it. And to make sure not a single stroke was out of place, they have been ably and patiently guided by their extremely talented teachers. But what's an artist without a patron? The management of the school has painstakingly provided time, space and the required resources to ensure that this painting will have a special place on the wall and we hope in your hearts!

The annual school production, at Inventure Aacdemy is an absolutely 'worth it' experince. During the production you learn to appreciate your part and realise others talents and interests in that field. You make friends or grow a friendship with your group, teachers,and love the art more.

The work and practice may be exceedingly demanding and tiring at times, but you have room to improvise , to edit and to perfect. It is very interesting to see more than one creative group work together after practicing seperately.

You see how everything will turn out and picture the final day in your head, making you strive more for perfection. At times you may feel that your role is not important, or that everything would be fine without you, but it won't. We all rely on each other, each person should showcase their talents and nothing is unimportant, after all, what would a dance be without music or a play without a set?

The production is a school production and each individual shouldn't expect a 'solo' production. This is a group thing and everyone should aknowledge and respect that.But over all, I think, every student should be involved so on the day of the preformance, they can have the pride to say "I took part in the Inventure Academy Production".

"On the 17th of November 2010, Inventure Academy took journey to Pune, Maharashtra with a team of 36, all with potential to mount the Victory stand at The Association of International Schools of India (TAISI) hosted by Vishwashanti Gurukul World School. Athletics coach, Mr. Srinivas Naidu, Mr. Suresh Balaraj, sports director, Mr. Kishen Whabi and teacher Mrs. Mary Whabi accompanied the Inventure contingent with the help of enthusiastic hearted parent volunteers to Pune.

After an early morning flight and a one hour journey in and out of the city of Pune, we reached Vishwashanti Gurukul. Our team members ran about, claiming their beds in the dormitories, after which a vegetarian lunch was served to us, courtesy Gurukul’s management. After a filling meal, an afternoon nap was called for by many in the group. Soon enough, in the evening, Mr Srini took the athletics team to the field to take a look at the tracks and the other facilities we were to use during the course of the competition. Not being allowed to warm up on the tracks due to maintenance, Mr Srini took the team to the playground of the school, in which he made us warm and stretch our muscles for the events on the oncoming days.

After a good night’s rest, the morning call from the coaches got us all up and ready for the opening ceremony and the march past. After a series of inspiring speeches and a dose of the sun’s heat, the march past began. We were the only school that marched to precision while the coaches and parent volunteers stood with their heads held high as the contingent marched its way passed them at the “eyes right” command. After the sports meet was declared open, all the running heats and the qualification rounds for the sports teams began. Children of different age groups gathered from across 17 international schools across India. Some of the other schools who participated were Indus International, Bangalore International, Podar International, Aditya Birla World Academy and International School of Hyderabad.

However, I personally believe, there was no beating Inventure’s determined contingent in terms of optimism, team loyalty and team spirit. Seniors helped juniors as the juniors supported their friends in bringing a sense of courage for the participants who were to display their talents to their full potential.

In the three days of the competition all events for all the categories went by, but Inventure’s spirit never seemed to subside. From the announcement table, the name of Inventure was called several times in acknowledgement of our students wins. Other schools, who had never heard of Inventure Academy before, were convinced that Inventure Academy harboured a team of true spirit with a competitive attitude almost impossible to beat. Gold, silver and bronze medals shone brilliantly around the necks of Inventure Academy’s participants, as the hard work put in by coaches and students deserved.

The day’s wins included Individual Championships for:

Best player Girls Category C by Payal Kela- Grade 9

Best player Girls Category E by Anika Desai- Grade 5

Although Inventure Academy did not take the overall championship due to the limitations of events the teams were allowed to participate in, Inventure flew back from Pune proud high spirited, with an unbeatable aura of winning that the team had carried throughout the competition. Inventure Academy went as a team, not only to win, but to display its brilliance to schools from all over the country and came back a proud and hard working team!

`It was a display of amazing goals and excellent defence'- Under 13 Girls' Soccer Team

For months we had prepared for this event! Ever since the beginning of the school year in fact! I am not a very sporty person but after all that FIFA fever and because of my own will, I started to play more and more soccer. Finally a girl’s team was formed, with all my friends included:

1. Maya- Captain and mid-defense

2. Keya- Striker

3. Koodrut – striker

4. Sahana- defense

5. Tanya- defense

6. Neeti- substitute

7. Roshni- substitute

8. Anusha-Substitute

9. Drithi- Goalkeeper

We worked hard, learning many new techniques and practicing continuously. Everyone on the team was bent on winning and put all their effort and energy into doing their best. In the Dassera holidays, most of the girls came and sacrificed three days of holidays for intense practice! We dribbled around cones, practiced heading the ball, passed the ball to our team mates while running, penalties and much more! Throughout practice we thoroughly enjoyed playing felt ready for any challenges.

On the day of the match everyone was filled with mixed feelings of nervousness and excitement. As I got off at Greenwood High, I could feel Goosebumps and uneasiness run inside me. Lucky for us, there weren’t too many girl teams and if we won at least one match, we would manage to reach the semi finals.

The first match was against Vidyashilp Academy and they looked scary, but one shouldn’t judge a person on how they look but how they play. We tried our best and that’s all that mattered. Unfortunately or efforts weren’t as good as they could have been and we lost the first match 2-nil. Everyone thought about it and we decided that it was our first match as a team and we could have done better. We felt even more nervous because we had to win this match or it would be our ticket out of the tournament. The next day we came back, even more determined to really fight it out. We practiced through the entire breakfast time doing some passing. As once again we came onto the field, the smell of the grass and confidence in the air, we played much harder and with all our might.

Keya got a throw in and with her position close to the opponent’s goal; she knew that this was our ultimate chance to score! Keya threw the ball with all her might to Sahana. With the opposite teams players approaching fast, Sahana passed to Roshni who quickly kicked the ball … and it was a GOAL! The opponents’ goalkeeper looked surprised and didn’t seem to have been guarding the goal when Roshni kicked the ball in. Everyone screamed in delight. For the rest of the match, we all moved back to defend. The other team, DPS east never made a goal and we made it to the semi-finals!!!

We played the semi-finals against Greenwood High, the host school who did prove very formidable, but nothing we couldn’t deal with. A kick from Sahana proved that we were going to make it to the finals after all, giving us the goal we needed! The other team though had some fast players though and their captain played very well. Everyone was really excited but we all felt very pressurized because the finals were the next day. On the finals everyone played truly with their hearts. We played against none other than Vidyashilp, the team that had beaten us earlier. Nothing would get away with our victory and all of us played very rough.

Some memorable moves throughout all the matches were:-

1. Maya’s hard and high kicks along with her ace defense

2. Tanya blocking all the hard corners and her well timed kicks

3. Sahana’s amazing goal and excellent defense

4. Koodrut’s quick dribbling and reflex

5. Keya’s rapid passing and well angled throw ins

6. Roshni’s stupefying goal and fast feet

7. Neeti’s great defense and helping to block the opponents from scoring

8. Drithi’s awesome saves and clearing of the ball

9. I enjoyed playing defense and I tried my hardest to block the strikers and goal kicks

The opponents had very good defense and they had a petite but agile player who proved very difficult for us. There were two girls we cleared the ball every time we approached their goal. We did manage a few times though, to almost score a goal but their goal keeper was very good and well-trained, proving quite difficult. We played the entire match, without either side managing the throttle a goal inside the net. The penalties were the deciding result of the entire match.

We lost the match 2-nil because of the penalties as the opponent goalkeeper blocked very well (we tried pretty hard though). Everybody was upset but we knew that it was not a bad match we had played and that there is no shame in losing at penalties. It proved how well we had played during the rest of the match! We also appreciated it when Vidyashilp clapped for us and cheered telling us that we had played very well.

The awards ceremony took a while and when everyone had received their small trophies with a golden boot and ball inside the cup, we cheered with joy! We also got a silver bowl trophy because we placed second placed in the girl’s tournament! Everyone held it, smiles lighting up the faces of all, happy they had contributed towards this! I would like to thank my fellow teammates and our coach, Freddy Sir for coaching us so well! Getting this far is quite an achievement to us and the best part is seeing that we added to the vast collection of trophies Inventure already has!

Payel Kela aspires to represent India in CWG and Olympics

Payal Kela of Inventure Academy was a standout during Banaglore School Games at Kanteerva Stadoum held recently. This 14 year old won two golds in the individual event and added one in the 4X 400 relay. Excepts of her interview with Media Pod (MP) students.

MP: What was your preparedness level for the event?

PK: The organizers had done a great job of inviting over 50 schools and over 1000 students. The athletics facilities at the stadium were also fantastic. The stands were rather empty.

At Inventure, the participants used the Dussehera holidays to train for the event. It was heartening to see so many of Inventure kids come for practice every morning for 2 hours.

MP. How did you typically feel on the day before the event and just before the event is about to start?

PK: The day before the event I was a bit nervous. I knew that I worked hard for the event and that I would just do my best . Half an hour before my event I was extremely nervous and was trying to relax by lying down . My dad encouraged me to just do my best without worrying about winning or losing and that helped me calm down a bit.

IA. How did it feel to represent your school at Bangalore School Games?

PK: It was a great feeling to represent my school in the tournament and be with other Inventure kids who were all in the same boat and competing. I also felt that the school had expectations of some of doing well in the competition so there was a sense of drive along with nervousness to not let the school down.

IA.What does it feel to see your names in some of the leading national dailies?

PK: Winning 3 Gold medals in 400M, 800M and 4x400 competing against all Bangalore schools and to see my name in the papers was one of the best feelings I had that I will cherish for a long time. It was very motivating. I realized that I had accomplished something big. I have always wanted to make my family, coach and school proud of me and I felt I had accomplished it.

It was also a proud moment for me to be part of bringing Inventure in the limelight. The school has done a lot for people like me and I felt that my efforts would make the school proud.

IA. What motivates you as a sportsperson?

PK: Sports intrinsically drive one towards perfection because you are always striving to get to the first place in any competition. I love sports and always want to compete and that has lead me to become a perfectionist.

IA. What is the role played by your school in your achievements?

PK: Inventure is very supportive of sports and has a great infrastructure for us athletes to train and develop. Nooraine mam, Kishen Sir and Srini Sir provide excellent moral and hands-on support and the practice session that they have introduced after-school are making a huge impact on our performance.

Also, I noticed that at the tournament our school team was pouring their heart and soul out and cheering us on when one of us was competing.

IA. What are the qualities of sports which you can apply in classrooms as well?

PK: My dad always says, in sports you have to lose many times to get that one win. These losses are initial disappointments but if you take it the right way, they are excellent motivators to improve yourself and do better in the subsequent races. Also, sports require tremendous discipline and focus. The combination of the these two qualities is generally applicable in studying as well. I find myself more focused and motivated (if I do badly) to do well in tests and exams as a result of sports.

IA. What are your future plans?

PK: I would love to represent India in a major sports event such as Common Wealth Games, Asian Games or even Olympics. I know that a long shot but I would like to give it a try.

Also, I feel that I would like to provide a world-class sports environment for future athletes in India and increase the awareness and interest in sports in India. I would love to start a sports academy where we can focus on producing world-class champions.

PGTI 1 Team including Nooraine Fazal wins the LG Race to Ireland Pro-Am

The PGTI 1 team comprising of professionals Amandeep Johl and Arjun Singh and amateurs Mr. Kapil Dev, Ms. Nooraine Fazal and Mr. K K Bajoria won the LG Race to Ireland Pro-Am at the Jaypee Greens golf course on Sunday.

The second round of the Pro-Am was played in the scramble format. In the scramble format each amateur player teed off on each hole. The better of the two tee shots were selected and both players played their second shots from that spot. Subsequently the better of the second shots was determined and then both played their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball was holed. The professional pair followed the same process as the amateurs.

PGTI 1 (128-121) was the winning team as it ended up with a score of 249. PGTI 1 included professionals Amandeep Johl and Arjun Singh. The amateurs in the team were the legendary cricketer Mr. Kapil Dev, Ms. Nooraine Fazal and Mr. K K Bajoria. This team has now booked a berth at the Irish National Pro-Am which will be staged in 2011. The winning professionals also walked away with a prize money of Rs. 2 lakhs.

The team representing the Avantha Group (131-122) finished second with a total of 253. This team consisted of professionals Ashok Kumar and Gaurav Pratap Singh and amateurs Mr. Padamjit Sandhu, Mr. Harsh Gupta and Mr. Yudi Bahl.

Feroz Ali Mollah and Randhir Singh Ghotra won the prize for the best professional pair of round one as they had recorded a score of nine under 63 on Saturday. They took home a prize purse of Rs. 110,000.

Ashok Kumar and Gaurav Pratap Singh won the prize for the best professional pair of round two as they recorded a score of 13 under 59 on Sunday. They took home a prize purse of Rs. 110,000.

Thoughts of pain aroused in their minds; remembering the members of their clan who had been killed,
The time of year had come again and those big monsters looked scary indeed,
They came towards the patch of the queen herself; who started muttering silent pleas of help,
But tis not even god to save her; for they came and destroyed wherever they pleased,
She bid her subjects goodbye and left the kingdom of Mother Earth forever,
The men of the soil were dug up once more till there was a huge hole in the earth,
The grass eyed it sadly; missing ever so, their dear old queen.
The infant seed was planted, and the creatures left, leaving their subjects in pain,
There was so much sadness and tears to spill out that day,
God, of course, was upset as well, and once more did the celestial angels pour down their sorrow.
Their tears reached the earth solemnly, with a mission to fulfill,
The grasses danced gently in the breeze, tossing their heads in utter joy,
The seed was given the gift of life; yet another story of an endless journey,
Towards its destiny it climbed; even to the tops of the highest mountain,

All of my family; whether redwoods alike; are all long gone in this game they call ‘life’,
What will become of me, know not ; for no matter how strong I remain,
Ever so angry, do they try; to rid this world of what beauty still survives,

Of what understanding; truth and virtues, struggle to live,
Soon we won’t call this place Mother Earth; but simply Monster….
Nature will go into its eternal sleep; the sea will drown itself out,
The air will get suffocated from the noxious fumes caused by none other than man,
The earth will withdraw itself and remain dead; no trees to support its health,
Then man will realize his huge mistake; he will try to repent for his wrong doings,
But go will not answer, for he too has nothing to live for,
Man will join all in the eternal slumber he has caused; and all will be quiet once more.
The trees, the guardians of the world, are at rest; because of man’s careless mistakes,
The weeping willow eventually died; from misery and woe; of course she had naught to support her,
The spiny acacia; home to many creatures, a symbol of happiness; ugly as she was, get to too left too…
If man doesn’t realize his mistakes now; what will become of our home, of trees, of love itself?
What will this place come to?
Once more must the infant seeds be planted without being felled!
Once more must they grow and embark on the journey to enlighten all;
To teach them the meaning of life and the internal fires inside, all must glow brightly through all,
We must all join hands together unite; trees; man; animals and all creatures alike,
We must save our home sweet home; before all that’s left of her is gone, forever.

Habitat- as I see it

Recently in our Theme class we learnt about habitat- that it is a place where the living creatures find food and shelter and also safe from their enemies. Inventure plants trees for free

Have you ever thought about how life would be in 5 years? Many thoughts might have flooded your head, but think again. The water crisis in 2015 will be immense. One family of four would have to survive on only 1 litre of water a day!

That is where trees come in. If the future is going to be such a nightmare, we might as well try and play our part. Add a bit of greenery to your city and plant a tree. That is what Inventure students learnt to do on October 22nd.

Three social workers from an NGO `Trees for Free', came to school and preached to us, a few words of wisdom about trees. Many of us weren’t so interested in the speeches, but when we got on our feet and started planting little saplings around our tennis courts, we were all for it. We planted around 50 trees that afternoon. Jackfruit, Pomegranate, Singapore Cherry, and many other interesting varieties were planted.

We worked in groups of four as there weren’t enough trees to be planted; after all there were about 200 of us. Each team had to give a name to the tree we were going to nurture. We had a great time and I sure hope the trees did too! It would be awesome to see these young plants grow into majestic trees with our care.

The Cry Of The Wolf

I look around me. Silence. The tall trees tower over me, and the moon shines bright. Cocking my ears, I listen for any sign of movement. I can sense something. Something dangerous was coming. Human footsteps. I’d better make a dash for it and warn my family, hiding in the bushes. No! My foolish sister assumes it is a deer and jumps out. Her eyes widen as she sees the gun, pointing at her face. She howls, calling for me and my brothers. We dare not go out to protect her. It would be the last of us. We can see up to ten hunters, maybe more.

I look at her pleading face, and she meets my eyes. I shake my mane slightly. She must pay the price for being so careless. I blink once and she hangs her head. The humans take the gun, aim and shoot. Blood explodes out of her body and I watch in silence. But for my brother it is too much. He will not tolerate this. He howls and the humans turn their attention to us. ‘Run’ I growl. We race through the forest, with the humans on our tails. Just as we reach our hideout, my brother’s dive inside our hole, but I turn back. I need to retrieve our sister’s body. But I was mistaken. There is one man there. I growl, but he aims his gun.

I may as well say my last words with pride. We wolves are the most noble creature’s on Earth, but we are vanishing. Do not let my brothers end up the same way I am ending. Please save us, dear children. Help us.

Inventure Academy wins the 4X 400 m relay by finishing it in 5:10.3 mins at the Bangalore School Games 2010 at the Sree Kanteerva Stadium. The school also defeated Vibyor by 14-4 in Basketball.

Inventure Academy made headlines recently for being awarded the Champions Atheletics School at Bangalore School Games 2010. Around 60 schools from across Bengaluru participated in this three day event recently concluded at Sree Kanteerva Stadium.

Classroom or a cocoon?

Yesterday I spotted these vibrant butterflies in Inventure Academy. Then I thought ‘Hmmm They must be having a content life! ‘They have no protocol to follow, no rat race to face. All they have to do is look vivid and fly around shrubs and trees.

We have to endure years of schooling to get a job and once employed there are infinite challenges to face. While we humans are busy replicating our own DNA and designing new gizmos and gadgets, they fly from flower to flower looking for nectar. They live in a serene environment while we battle it out in the chaotic concrete world.

They merely do what they are programmed to do without defying the laws of nature unlike us humans. We try to simplify things by messing with nature but we are getting entangled in the complex web of our own creations. For example, we design faster cars that guzzle up petrol and cough up fumes. That in turn perforates our lung and the ozone layer!!

In a butterfly world, it is always Sunday. There are no clocks ticking, no dead lines to meet!!! They don’t need degree from IIM / IIT to be successful; instead they just need wings to get them around. The hardest thing they ever have to do is pollinate. Our lives are so complicated and stressful. I wish I could metamorphose into a butterfly and live a short but simple life.

With the educational approach of independent thinking and logical reasoning being the cornerstone of learning at Inventure Academy, it is no surprise that our students have done exceptionally well in Assessment of Scholastic skills through Educational Testing (ASSET) 2010 held in August.

Working group on RTE Act formed

All of you already know her as a member of our Management Team. She brings to Inventure and the position a wealth of experience, accolades and expertise which we will all benefit from tremendously. These include:

In her role as Principal, Ms. Sen will be overall responsible for converting into reality Inventure Academy’s core purpose and vision. More specifically, she will be responsible for the entire Academic function and day to day administration of Inventure Academy, including making actionable our school development plan and policies.

In this role, she will report to me in my capacity as the CEO & Managing Trustee of Inventure Academy. In a little over five years, Inventure Academy has grown from a start up to a tremendous success as evidenced by our many achievements, be it in academics, sports or co-curricular activities:

• We are ranked in the top 25 day schools all India in the September issue of the 2010 EducationWorld C-Fore survey
• Our academic results at the Grade 10 IGCSE & ICSE exams and in the ASSET tests
• Our various achievements in the sports arena at the inter school and all India levels

Inventure Academy bags at Outstanding Cambridge Learner Award

Suman Sridharan, now an AS grade student, did us proud by securing first place across India in Economics AS level examinations held by Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) in June 2010.

Suman says of the Head of School, Nooraine Fazal and his teachers. “They showed confidence and belief in my potential”.
