High School Muse-ical with 200 students!

A high school musical with two hundred adolescents??? What were we getting ourselves into!!?? Well for starters dollops of enthusiasm, heaps of energy and an outpouring of ideas (much contrary to what we expected)! Through this process we have encouraged the children to experiment, encouraged them to enjoy and tonight, we encourage them to excel!

If this production started out as a blank canvas, the painting you will see on stage today has been plotted, painted and perfected by each child bringing their own special colour to it. And to make sure not a single stroke was out of place, they have been ably and patiently guided by their extremely talented teachers. But what's an artist without a patron? The management of the school has painstakingly provided time, space and the required resources to ensure that this painting will have a special place on the wall and we hope in your hearts!

This journey, has been a truly Magically one!

`It was a display of amazing goals and excellent defence'- Under 13 Girls' Soccer Team

For months we had prepared for this event! Ever since the beginning of the school year in fact! I am not a very sporty person but after all that FIFA fever and because of my own will, I started to play more and more soccer. Finally a girl’s team was formed, with all my friends included:

1. Maya- Captain and mid-defense

2. Keya- Striker

3. Koodrut – striker

4. Sahana- defense

5. Tanya- defense

6. Neeti- substitute

7. Roshni- substitute

8. Anusha-Substitute

9. Drithi- Goalkeeper

We worked hard, learning many new techniques and practicing continuously. Everyone on the team was bent on winning and put all their effort and energy into doing their best. In the Dassera holidays, most of the girls came and sacrificed three days of holidays for intense practice! We dribbled around cones, practiced heading the ball, passed the ball to our team mates while running, penalties and much more! Throughout practice we thoroughly enjoyed playing felt ready for any challenges.

On the day of the match everyone was filled with mixed feelings of nervousness and excitement. As I got off at Greenwood High, I could feel Goosebumps and uneasiness run inside me. Lucky for us, there weren’t too many girl teams and if we won at least one match, we would manage to reach the semi finals.

The first match was against Vidyashilp Academy and they looked scary, but one shouldn’t judge a person on how they look but how they play. We tried our best and that’s all that mattered. Unfortunately or efforts weren’t as good as they could have been and we lost the first match 2-nil. Everyone thought about it and we decided that it was our first match as a team and we could have done better. We felt even more nervous because we had to win this match or it would be our ticket out of the tournament. The next day we came back, even more determined to really fight it out. We practiced through the entire breakfast time doing some passing. As once again we came onto the field, the smell of the grass and confidence in the air, we played much harder and with all our might.

Keya got a throw in and with her position close to the opponent’s goal; she knew that this was our ultimate chance to score! Keya threw the ball with all her might to Sahana. With the opposite teams players approaching fast, Sahana passed to Roshni who quickly kicked the ball … and it was a GOAL! The opponents’ goalkeeper looked surprised and didn’t seem to have been guarding the goal when Roshni kicked the ball in. Everyone screamed in delight. For the rest of the match, we all moved back to defend. The other team, DPS east never made a goal and we made it to the semi-finals!!!

We played the semi-finals against Greenwood High, the host school who did prove very formidable, but nothing we couldn’t deal with. A kick from Sahana proved that we were going to make it to the finals after all, giving us the goal we needed! The other team though had some fast players though and their captain played very well. Everyone was really excited but we all felt very pressurized because the finals were the next day. On the finals everyone played truly with their hearts. We played against none other than Vidyashilp, the team that had beaten us earlier. Nothing would get away with our victory and all of us played very rough.

Some memorable moves throughout all the matches were:-

1. Maya’s hard and high kicks along with her ace defense

2. Tanya blocking all the hard corners and her well timed kicks

3. Sahana’s amazing goal and excellent defense

4. Koodrut’s quick dribbling and reflex

5. Keya’s rapid passing and well angled throw ins

6. Roshni’s stupefying goal and fast feet

7. Neeti’s great defense and helping to block the opponents from scoring

8. Drithi’s awesome saves and clearing of the ball

9. I enjoyed playing defense and I tried my hardest to block the strikers and goal kicks

The opponents had very good defense and they had a petite but agile player who proved very difficult for us. There were two girls we cleared the ball every time we approached their goal. We did manage a few times though, to almost score a goal but their goal keeper was very good and well-trained, proving quite difficult. We played the entire match, without either side managing the throttle a goal inside the net. The penalties were the deciding result of the entire match.

We lost the match 2-nil because of the penalties as the opponent goalkeeper blocked very well (we tried pretty hard though). Everybody was upset but we knew that it was not a bad match we had played and that there is no shame in losing at penalties. It proved how well we had played during the rest of the match! We also appreciated it when Vidyashilp clapped for us and cheered telling us that we had played very well.

The awards ceremony took a while and when everyone had received their small trophies with a golden boot and ball inside the cup, we cheered with joy! We also got a silver bowl trophy because we placed second placed in the girl’s tournament! Everyone held it, smiles lighting up the faces of all, happy they had contributed towards this! I would like to thank my fellow teammates and our coach, Freddy Sir for coaching us so well! Getting this far is quite an achievement to us and the best part is seeing that we added to the vast collection of trophies Inventure already has!

The Tree of Life

The grass stared silently at the filthy looking creatures coming towards them,
Thoughts of pain aroused in their minds; remembering the members of their clan who had been killed,
The time of year had come again and those big monsters looked scary indeed,
They came towards the patch of the queen herself; who started muttering silent pleas of help,
But tis not even god to save her; for they came and destroyed wherever they pleased,
She bid her subjects goodbye and left the kingdom of Mother Earth forever,
The men of the soil were dug up once more till there was a huge hole in the earth,
The grass eyed it sadly; missing ever so, their dear old queen.
The infant seed was planted, and the creatures left, leaving their subjects in pain,
There was so much sadness and tears to spill out that day,
God, of course, was upset as well, and once more did the celestial angels pour down their sorrow.
Their tears reached the earth solemnly, with a mission to fulfill,
The grasses danced gently in the breeze, tossing their heads in utter joy,
The seed was given the gift of life; yet another story of an endless journey,
Towards its destiny it climbed; even to the tops of the highest mountain,
It grew and grew steadily; till it was able to watch the sun fall from the sky,
Or the birds soaring above their abode in the clouds; or even the animals roaming the forest;
The tree connected with and saw all that must be seen; wiser beyond his years and times to be told.
His mind travelled around the world; seeing what a monster it has become, saddening his heart ever so,
He witnessed the weeping willow’s weeping silently near the riverside,
Or the spiny acacia sitting sadly being spurned by all the other beautiful creatures,
No matter how sad my sister the Weeping Willow is; no matter how much she whimpers,
The evil creatures they call humans pay no heed and leave her in despair,
They don’t fell her like my kind; they leave her to weep,
My cousin; the spiny acacia too is left alone; for she is too ugly and spurns all,
What good might come from; only time will tell; they wonder; such darkness hath filled them,
They don’t fell her like kind; they leave her in a world of loneliness,
But what about other trees, like me the tall redwood,
I have nothing against all and I love all creatures; no matter how destructive change to they be ,
This world is not one of love; but is one great battlefield; where only one is left standing,
All of my family; whether redwoods alike; are all long gone in this game they call ‘life’,
What will become of me, know not ; for no matter how strong I remain,
Ever so angry, do they try; to rid this world of what beauty still survives,

Of what understanding; truth and virtues, struggle to live,
Soon we won’t call this place Mother Earth; but simply Monster….
Nature will go into its eternal sleep; the sea will drown itself out,
The air will get suffocated from the noxious fumes caused by none other than man,
The earth will withdraw itself and remain dead; no trees to support its health,
Then man will realize his huge mistake; he will try to repent for his wrong doings,
But go will not answer, for he too has nothing to live for,
Man will join all in the eternal slumber he has caused; and all will be quiet once more.
The trees, the guardians of the world, are at rest; because of man’s careless mistakes,
The weeping willow eventually died; from misery and woe; of course she had naught to support her,
The spiny acacia; home to many creatures, a symbol of happiness; ugly as she was, get to too left too…
If man doesn’t realize his mistakes now; what will become of our home, of trees, of love itself?
What will this place come to?
Once more must the infant seeds be planted without being felled!
Once more must they grow and embark on the journey to enlighten all;
To teach them the meaning of life and the internal fires inside, all must glow brightly through all,
We must all join hands together unite; trees; man; animals and all creatures alike,
We must save our home sweet home; before all that’s left of her is gone, forever.

Classroom or a cocoon?

Yesterday I spotted these vibrant butterflies in Inventure Academy. Then I thought ‘Hmmm They must be having a content life! ‘They have no protocol to follow, no rat race to face. All they have to do is look vivid and fly around shrubs and trees.

We have to endure years of schooling to get a job and once employed there are infinite challenges to face. While we humans are busy replicating our own DNA and designing new gizmos and gadgets, they fly from flower to flower looking for nectar. They live in a serene environment while we battle it out in the chaotic concrete world.

They merely do what they are programmed to do without defying the laws of nature unlike us humans. We try to simplify things by messing with nature but we are getting entangled in the complex web of our own creations. For example, we design faster cars that guzzle up petrol and cough up fumes. That in turn perforates our lung and the ozone layer!!

In a butterfly world, it is always Sunday. There are no clocks ticking, no dead lines to meet!!! They don’t need degree from IIM / IIT to be successful; instead they just need wings to get them around. The hardest thing they ever have to do is pollinate. Our lives are so complicated and stressful. I wish I could metamorphose into a butterfly and live a short but simple life.

THE BOND

She gazed longingly
At the coffin outside
Her grief, her sorrow
Was hard to hide

Years before the fateful day
Walking hand in hand
A sulky daughter& a worried mother
Watching waves meeting the sand

Later that night
With bags on her back
She slips through the moonlit night
Never to look back

Now reading her mother's will
With an untouched cup of tea
How strong her bond was
With he mother, she could clearly see

Safety Ambassadors 2010

Anyone would wish to live a life of a CEO, even if it is for a day!

Pranav, my classmate and I too aspire to get into the shoes of CEO of Underwriters Laboratories, an independent product safety certification organization that has been testing products and writing standards for safety for more than a century.

But for that the first step would be to realize that safety is one such thing which cannot be compromised, no matter whether we are at school, playground, bus, home or at mall.

We represented our school Inventure Academy for a workshop by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) in association with NIE newspaper, the student edition of The Times of India.

The programme started with UL representative giving us a brief on how to practice safety measures at home to avoid any dangerous accidents like a fire in the house.

Things we learned:
• We shouldn’t use frayed electrical cords.
• We shouldn’t plug too many electrical cords in one outlet.
• We should only coo with adult supervision.
• We should keep electrical heaters at least three feet from objects.
• We should never cover electric appliances
• We should have an escape plan for your home just in case there is a fire.
• You must know your name, address, and phone number.
• You must know how to call 1-0-1 in an emergency.

How the competition will work:

This was just the first part of the programme. The following month we will be going to the one of their Bangalore laboratories.

It will be followed by an on the field job, where we as safety ambassadors will inspect a dozen of houses and gauge how much safety norms do they follow, prepare a report and present it to UL.

The individual whose report best reflects the learning of safety norms and exhibits good knowledge of it.

We are waiting for the next session!!

INVENTURING- A unique foundation program at Inventure Academy

A new academic session at Inventure Academy does not start with books, uniforms or in classrooms but with Inventuring - a unique foundation program aimed at cementing bonds between teachers and students, making new students comfortable and setting the key note for expectations at Inventure Academy.

Students engage in projects – both single and in groups – and experience first hand, the creative process, thinking-out- of- the- box and being active participants in a team. The hidden agenda is helping students realize their inner potential, making them believe in themselves, understanding ways of true learning and respecting interdependence.

“It is because there is no `One Way’ to get the best out of the children,’’ states Inventure Academy Head of Kindergarten and Primary, Shaheen Shafi, who has been the architect and part of this tradition of Inventuring since inception.

Designed on Howard Gardener’s theory of Multiple Intelligences and Inventure’s core values , the 2010-11 ‘Inventuring’ started with a daily schedule of students participating in four broad categories- Outdoor, Classroom Projects, Choice Time and Golden Time.

During Inventuring, each day started with an outdoor activity, like dance or sports, to kick-start mental and physical agility and facilitating team bonding. This was followed with classroom projects based on exploring Multiple Intelligences (MI) of students.

The classroom projects on multiple intelligences had larger themes like Colors Of Our World, Creative Sparks, Think-a thon under which students were tasks specific to their grades.

In Colors of Our World, students of grade 1 and 2 created pictures using cardboard shapes, grade 3 and 4 created a family using balloons, wool, paint, fabric and cotton. Grades 5 and 6 students created a chandelier using empty bottles, straws and paper cups. Grade 7 and 8 painted their groups to create a “people sculpture” based on a few topics/themes, and grades 9 and 10 had to create an installation based on the topic of the cityscape using the fabrics & card board.

Similarly under creative sparks, each class was divided into groups of five students who made an advertisement either on washing powder, shampoo, dog food, energy drink, tooth-paste and sell it in the most convincing manner to their peers and teachers!

Think-a-thon was equally fun as students in primary section were either asked to make a toy using plastic glasses and straws, make a card game and define its rules and demonstrate how to play, make a 3-D model of a house from a given floor plan.

``The activities of project, were designed to judge their logical thinking, functionality, creativity, variety, co-ordination, rhythm and stage presentation,’’ adds Shaheen.

``It was amazing to see the creative ideas in students and their conviction in presenting it as the best,’’ exclaims Ekta Bhasin a teacher of grade 5B.While students from smaller grades designed telephone, bells, bouncing balls and juice set for Barbie by using only five plastic glasses and straws, the higher grades students designed different phases of a space ship prior to its launch.

Classroom projects were then followed by Choice Time which would give students a choice of activity from options like sketching, climbing wall, mosaic art, gardening or cooking. The aim of having a Choice Time as part of Inventuring is to nurture individuality and give students an opportunity to explore different choices before zeroing in on what they are best at.

The Inventuring day wrapped up with Golden Time- an integral part of learning, where students’ reflected on their day’s learning and sharing related experiences.

`` My project on choosing natural elements to create music during Wild Wide World has changed my view towards my surrounding. I realized that even a few pebbles in a plastic bottle can create a beautiful beat,’’ says new student Aishwarya Hirve, grade 4 summarizing her understanding facilitated by Golden Time.

Curtains came down on Inventuring with a Sleepover for grades 3 and above during which students along with teachers stayed back in school for a night, a once-in-a year event. ``It was sports, bonfire, music, dance and good food on offer. Most of the arrangements were made by our school and it was only fun and activity for us,’’ says Tarang Shah of grade 5 B.

Students and teachers went around the campus, collected wood for the bonfire, and danced around on music, played games. ``While some used mattress provided by school, others got their sleeping bags and chatted till late in the night.

``This is what the aim of Inventuring is, to notice one child amongst many and to look at the world through his eyes,’’ summarizes Shaheen.

The Store House of Knowledge....

At our school we have a library,
For people who dont like books it will be scary,
I tried doing inventory today,
Boy! I almost ran away!

There are so many books to be read,
I dont think I'll finish them till I'm dead,
They take you into a whole new world,
Even books covered in mold!

In our library, there are books galore
Even books on iron ore,
I really want to suggest,
To never ever ever protest!

I really feel like owning this place,
And giving it to the human race,
I really want to see the childrens faces,
When they read about so many wonderful places!

Inkspell : A Book review

Inkspell is a novel by the most inspiring author, Cornelia Funke. A sequel to the fantastic book, Inkheart, Inkspell is like a magnet. It pulls you towards it and puts a whole different world around you instead of taking you into the book (not to discriminate you being the negative pole) The book for young readers is recommended by many a person.
This cliff-hanging story continues from the part where a young girl, Meggie, has got her mother back and she has discovered that she has inhabited the trait of reading people into books. Then Orpheus, another person with this ability reads Dustfinger, a friend of Meggie’s into the Ink world, his homeland. Meggie and Farid (her true love, <3) follow him in there. Meggie is old enough to know that her parents will get worried about her and she is right. Sure enough, Resa and Mo are sent by Orpheus, along with Mortola and Basta, the surviving villains from the first book. Mortola shoots Mo, who hangs onto his life by a thin thread. As Meggie falls in love, she loses Dustfinger, kills Basta and rescues her parents. The story ends with Farid saying determinedly, "I'll bring Dustfinger back. This story will have a happy ending. I swear!"
Want to fight a war? Decipher letters? Fall in love with a book? Learn all about a new world? Just turn the pages of Inkspell and soon you will find yourself reading the last page of Inkdeath as well!

ARTEMIS FOWL: A BOOK REVIEW

Artemis Fowl’s is on a family estate on the outskirts of Dublin, Ireland. Artemis Fowl Senior, a wealthy crime lord, wanted to go become a successful businessman. Unfortunately, he disappeared when his ship, the Fowl Star, sank in an attempt to deliver 250,000 cans of cola to Siberia.
His wife, Angeline Fowl, went insane and moved into the manor's attic. His son, Artemis Fowl Junior, the book's hero is convinced that his father is still alive and spends all his time and almost all the family's fortune trying to find him. When the money began to run out, Artemis devised a plan to steal gold from the race of fairies living underground and known as "The People." His plan was simple. He would kidnap a fairy and hold it for ransom. Unfortunately, he did not count on the wit of Holly Short, the fairy he kidnapped. Holly Short is a captain of the LEPrecon (Lower Elemental Police Reconnaissance) an supreme force trained in dealing with the "Mud People" (humans).
Holly has Julius Root, the commander of the LEPrecon, Foaly, a techie centaur, Mulch Diggums, "a kleptomaniac dwarf, and a dimwitted troll on her side. Artemis has on his side Butler, his trusted bodyguard, and Julie, Butler's sixteen-year old sister. Artemis has the fairies outwitted at every turn until he makes one devastating mistake.
Finally Artemis steal’s the fairies and makes a witty enemy, Captain Holly Short.
This is the first book in the series, about criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl. It is written by Eoin Colfer.
I think his books are very captivating and filled to the brim with adventure.

I think this book has an adventurous plot and is well written. I would give this book a 10/10.

INKHEART: A BOOK REVIEW

Imagine you could bring the characters from your favorite books to life? Well, Meggie’s father Mo can, but his gift comes at a terrible price. Join Meggie, Mo and the rest of the book-loving gang in Cornelia Funke’s magical story, Inkheart.
Twelve-year-old Meggie loves books more than anything in the world. And so does her father Mo, a bookbinder, who keeps stacks of books all over the house like wobbly pieces of art. They live a quiet life, surrounded by stories and fairy tales.

Until one day, a mysterious stranger with a scarred face arrives in the dead of the night who calls himself Dustfinger and, for some strange reason, he refers to Mo as Silvertongue. Secretly, Meggie listens to their hushed conversations and discovers the terrifying reason for the man’s visit.
She also discovers the reason for her mother’s mysterious disappearance nine years ago:

When Meggie was three, Mo read aloud from a book called Inkheart. And suddenly, before his eyes, three characters emerged from its pages: Dustfinger, the scar-faced stranger; Capricorn, the story’s villain; and Basta, Capricorn’s sidekick. And unfortunately, Meggie’s mother and their two cats vanished into the book.

Dustfinger gives Mo a warning: Capricorn is after him and the last copy of Inkheart. He wants Mo to release the evil Shadow (A deadly creature) out of Inkheart’s pages. Unfortunately, Mo has no control over which characters come out of the book. But Capricorn doesn’t believe him. So,

Mo and Meggie are forced to leave home, but will they escape or did Dustfinger’s warning come too late?

Inkheart is magical, adventurous and perfect for any book addict. It’s written like a modern fairy tale and is sure to become a classic.

The Battle of the Minds-A Poem

The monster in my mind
Truly make me blind
They are trying to break free
And bring out the worst in me.

They threaten to unsheathe all their claws
And break the decent laws.
They tear up all my veins
You cannot hold them back with the world’s biggest chains

It’s the battle of the minds
It’s my chance to choose the kinds
If I don’t make the right decision
I will forever be part of this incision
Locked up in the prison cell of my mind
I will forever forget all the kinds
It’s the battle of the minds

It is Satan, The monster in my mind
He is known for all his crimes
If he wins it will be bad
I will always be sad
And he will shout with glee
“I won over you Melody”
He will blacken my soul
Like a troll

He will show of his claws
Forgetting all the laws
He will remove the light from my life
And allow the darkness to cut through me like a knife
He will allow truth to hide away
And let the lies fall on me like the suns rays
He will pull me away from all my loved ones
And put me within dangers path.
He will rule over my mind like a king
And I will not be able to do anything
It’s the battle of the minds
It’s my chance to choose the kinds
If I don’t make the right decision
I will forever be part of this incision
Locked up in the prison cell of my mind
I will forever forget all the kinds
It’s the battle of the minds.
