Sleep- Why tennis players need it by Dr Sunita Maheshwari

How often do tennis players do 500 rallies, 1000 skips, 200 serves and then come home and watch TV until midnight? And then wake up in 5 hours to begin the routine all over again ?

How often have you 'crashed all day' on a holiday 'making up your sleep'?

Sleep is one of the most under-studied, undervalued. Kids fight it, teenagers feel they don't need it, adults are so busy handling the stresses of life that they don't use it either.is used to help muscles grow.

Anabolic hormones such as growth hormones are secreted preferentially during sleep which help with overall growth. Tennis players need to grow...height for serve, muscle mass for stroke power. So, sleep is of the essence.

Interestingly, children who get enough sleep also find it easier to focus on school work. Their memory tends to be better, they grasp concepts faster. All this for tennis players is essential as they have limited time periods in which to do homework and school work catch up.
Interestingly too much sleep is also hazardous and there appears to be an ideal number of hours of sleep that one needs.

Age Average amount of sleep per day

3-5 years 11-13 hours

5-12 years 9-11 hours

Adolescents 9-10 hours

Adults 7-8 hours

Recent studies in adults, publicised in the medical community, have shown that 7-8 hours of sleep reduces blood pressure. Interestingly people who are sleep deprived take time losing weight..

In children the sleep is even more important - it is during sleep that muscles rest and the bones and muscles grow.Food consumed during the day is converted to protien which helps the muscles grow. Anabolic hormones such are as growth hormones are secreted preferentially during sleep which help with overall growth.

So start puuting your kids( and yourself) to sleep early. You will need to stop TV by 7 pm (you can turn it on once they have slept!!) and change your lifestyle to be able to give them their dinner earlier. If they haven't completed their homework, keep it for the morning.

Don't try to teach them at 10 pm, they will not retain anything and will just land up being sleep deprived leading to further lack of concentration the next morning.

On school nights:

1)Feed your kids dinner early ie by 7-7.30 pm, have them wash their feet and brush their teeth

2) Lights and TV and all noise except soft soothing music off by 8-8.30pm.

3) A nice oil leg message may help in-duce the zzzzzzzzzzz time or a cosy

cuddle in bed!

`It was a display of amazing goals and excellent defence'- Under 13 Girls' Soccer Team

For months we had prepared for this event! Ever since the beginning of the school year in fact! I am not a very sporty person but after all that FIFA fever and because of my own will, I started to play more and more soccer. Finally a girl’s team was formed, with all my friends included:

1. Maya- Captain and mid-defense

2. Keya- Striker

3. Koodrut – striker

4. Sahana- defense

5. Tanya- defense

6. Neeti- substitute

7. Roshni- substitute

8. Anusha-Substitute

9. Drithi- Goalkeeper

We worked hard, learning many new techniques and practicing continuously. Everyone on the team was bent on winning and put all their effort and energy into doing their best. In the Dassera holidays, most of the girls came and sacrificed three days of holidays for intense practice! We dribbled around cones, practiced heading the ball, passed the ball to our team mates while running, penalties and much more! Throughout practice we thoroughly enjoyed playing felt ready for any challenges.

On the day of the match everyone was filled with mixed feelings of nervousness and excitement. As I got off at Greenwood High, I could feel Goosebumps and uneasiness run inside me. Lucky for us, there weren’t too many girl teams and if we won at least one match, we would manage to reach the semi finals.

The first match was against Vidyashilp Academy and they looked scary, but one shouldn’t judge a person on how they look but how they play. We tried our best and that’s all that mattered. Unfortunately or efforts weren’t as good as they could have been and we lost the first match 2-nil. Everyone thought about it and we decided that it was our first match as a team and we could have done better. We felt even more nervous because we had to win this match or it would be our ticket out of the tournament. The next day we came back, even more determined to really fight it out. We practiced through the entire breakfast time doing some passing. As once again we came onto the field, the smell of the grass and confidence in the air, we played much harder and with all our might.

Keya got a throw in and with her position close to the opponent’s goal; she knew that this was our ultimate chance to score! Keya threw the ball with all her might to Sahana. With the opposite teams players approaching fast, Sahana passed to Roshni who quickly kicked the ball … and it was a GOAL! The opponents’ goalkeeper looked surprised and didn’t seem to have been guarding the goal when Roshni kicked the ball in. Everyone screamed in delight. For the rest of the match, we all moved back to defend. The other team, DPS east never made a goal and we made it to the semi-finals!!!

We played the semi-finals against Greenwood High, the host school who did prove very formidable, but nothing we couldn’t deal with. A kick from Sahana proved that we were going to make it to the finals after all, giving us the goal we needed! The other team though had some fast players though and their captain played very well. Everyone was really excited but we all felt very pressurized because the finals were the next day. On the finals everyone played truly with their hearts. We played against none other than Vidyashilp, the team that had beaten us earlier. Nothing would get away with our victory and all of us played very rough.

Some memorable moves throughout all the matches were:-

1. Maya’s hard and high kicks along with her ace defense

2. Tanya blocking all the hard corners and her well timed kicks

3. Sahana’s amazing goal and excellent defense

4. Koodrut’s quick dribbling and reflex

5. Keya’s rapid passing and well angled throw ins

6. Roshni’s stupefying goal and fast feet

7. Neeti’s great defense and helping to block the opponents from scoring

8. Drithi’s awesome saves and clearing of the ball

9. I enjoyed playing defense and I tried my hardest to block the strikers and goal kicks

The opponents had very good defense and they had a petite but agile player who proved very difficult for us. There were two girls we cleared the ball every time we approached their goal. We did manage a few times though, to almost score a goal but their goal keeper was very good and well-trained, proving quite difficult. We played the entire match, without either side managing the throttle a goal inside the net. The penalties were the deciding result of the entire match.

We lost the match 2-nil because of the penalties as the opponent goalkeeper blocked very well (we tried pretty hard though). Everybody was upset but we knew that it was not a bad match we had played and that there is no shame in losing at penalties. It proved how well we had played during the rest of the match! We also appreciated it when Vidyashilp clapped for us and cheered telling us that we had played very well.

The awards ceremony took a while and when everyone had received their small trophies with a golden boot and ball inside the cup, we cheered with joy! We also got a silver bowl trophy because we placed second placed in the girl’s tournament! Everyone held it, smiles lighting up the faces of all, happy they had contributed towards this! I would like to thank my fellow teammates and our coach, Freddy Sir for coaching us so well! Getting this far is quite an achievement to us and the best part is seeing that we added to the vast collection of trophies Inventure already has!

Suman Sridharan writes on what he missed on the sports field due to his unfortunate leg injury......

It's the end of the academic year and for sports in Inventure, this year has been packed. Inventure has been achieving on all fronts and the wins that our athletics, football, basketball teams are bringing back are solid proof. We had shared our victories in the Celebrations!!, a Power PointPresentation which reflected the accolades. For me this year hasn't been as active as I hoped due to my leg injury, and because of this I've been out of competition for the past 6 months.I miss the tingling in my gut just before I play, I miss the anxious first minutes of the game, I miss the feeling of competing with other people, and most of all I miss the joy of winning, but as the old school year goes out and the new one comes in I catch myself dreaming about the next tournament I participate in, I dream about which sport it is, how well I'm going to perform, how well my team is going to perform, and how much glory we as a team will reap in the coming year. Its me and my fellow 11th grader's final year and it would be great to win as much as possible, I hope we can set a standard for all future Inventurers, a goal to aim for and surpass, it has been an honor to be a part of this school, and I hope my contribution to setting an example for following batches in the field of sports is enough to repay my huge debt to this school.

TISB Interschool Tournament-Tennis

Recently our school participated in the TISB tennis tournament under 15 tennis tournament, our teams placed second in the boys category davis cup and third in the girls category Davis cup. The boys team consisted of Nischil, Adil, Martin, and Tanish, and the girls team consisted of Alisha, Namrata, and Valerie These are amazing results considering our players are at least two to three years younger than the competition. For those of you who aren't familiar with the davis cup format, it is fairly similar to standard tennis, the same rules apply, the difference is that the players are divided into squads of four, and each team must win one singles match, and one doubles match against the opponents to advance to the next round, however if the team loses either the doubles or the singles match they must play a singles match again called the reverse singles. Our boys team did very well by coming second, they beat National public school (Rajajinagar) without having to play the reverse singles, the same for TISB, they only had to play a reverse singles against Sarla Birla academy because they lost the doubles. After this they came on top of their pool and had to play against Delhi public school in which they lost, however they played very well with the points nearly always coming to deuce (tie). Our girls team did quite well as well, they reached third with points scored over Canadian International School and Delhi public school. Oddly enough they lost against Canadian winning the singles, and losing the doubles and reverse singles, they scored points with the singles win, and were on an equal footing with Delhi Public School south , however DPS did not show up for their face off with our school, presumably because they were too scared. This gave our team one point and they secured third place. The icing on the cake would definitely be Adil's win of best player, he is just 9 years old, and it is usually from the ranks of the winning team that this award is presented to, but he played so well that he justified the organizers giving him this prestigious award. well done to all those who participated they all performed very well and have made Inventure proud.

The Drummer's Call

A Visual Treat

The little sprinters of Kindergarten.

It was a bright, sunny day in December, ideal weather for a day of sports, sun and fun. As a commentator, I had the opportunity of seeing sports day from a different perspective. For once I was glad I didn’t have to march, I didn’t have struggle for breath after an event, and I didn’t have to sit on the floor in my house tent. So you see there are benefits to breaking a leg. The best part of it all, was, that I got to make rude, biased comments on every race, though I have to admit the death threats were coming in pretty fast.

As the second Sports Day I have witnessed in Inventure, I must say the standards have definitely gone up. The sports Day was an ideal showcase for the faculty, and students to show the parents how much they had achieved during the year. From the tiniest tots in their 60 meter races, to the older students in their 400 meter races, everyone put on a great show. However there must be winners, and in a shocking upset, the underdog houses of Inventure, the Nurturers and Inventors came first and second respectively, knocking of the Venturers and the Adventurers off their pedestals. Each individual champion really pulled his house through, hearty congratulations to them all!

The relays in my opinion were the prime events of the day, simply because, in no other race, do competitors from other divisions get to compete with one another, it is a true test of speed, strategy, and teamwork. There also needs to be a special mention for the dance/drill for both the kindergarteners (because they’re just cute, and they did their best) and the students who participated in the finale drill, which was fantastic to watch, congrats to the all the students, and the dance teachers who choreographed the dance/drill.

What I really like about the Inventure Academy Sports Day was the fact that there was all round participation, from the students, parents, teachers, and faculty. Each group had their own races, and each group did very well, I especially liked the teacher’s’ races, because for me it was a role reversal of sorts, where I got to sit in the shade, and they got to sweat it out in the sun. All in all a grand day, made even grander by the presence of our eminent, and good looking chief guest, Sharmilla Nicollette. Thanks to you all for coming, and hope to see you again next year.

Mary Whabi - Head of Beyond Academics writes:

Sports Day @ Inventure Academy

The most important day in the Sports calendar dawned at Inventure Academy, bright with sunshine and blue skies… the only clouds on the horizon were the soft, fluffy ones that make you want to smile…

The Sports field looked fittingly grand with the white lines and fluttering flags circling the field. The shamianas arrayed either side of the field in colorful splendor.

The day began with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Ms. Sharmila Nicolette, a young golfer who has scaled heights both on the national and international golfing circuit. She was accompanied by Ms Nooraine Fazal, our Head of School, Kishen Whabi, the Director for PE & Sports at Inventure Academy as well as the School and Sports Captains, Gauri Billore and Roshan Balaram.

The houses then marched past in fine display, led by the reigning champions, Venturers. The school band under the able baton of Sub. Major Ravinder, wowed us with their amazingly good renditions of “Brown Girl in the Rain” and “The Drummers Call”.

The little tots of Kindergarten were adorable as they spelled out their love for Inventure Academy through their drill display “V love IA”.

The games began in earnest with the 400m runs by the Middle & Senior School participants and moving on with the rest of the day’s program. The field events were well run and well contested. The supporters in the house enclosures cheered themselves hoarse, supporting their respective champions.

The parents and teachers races proved to be as hard fought as very sporting parents and teachers lined up to compete in their respective races to much cheer and applause!

The drill display by Grades 4&5 was one that would have rivaled any at the Olympics! The students danced and jigged their way right into all our hearts!

The end of the day saw the emerging of a new order of champions. For the first time in Inventure history, Nurturers were overjoyed to top the points tally with 238 points, followed closely by Inventors at 227 points. Last year’s champions, Venturers, had to settle for third place with Adventurers rounding off the tally. Our champions of note for the day were:

Division 1 Individual Champions: Aashna Ibrahim (Girls) & Aadi Walia Boys)

Division II Individual Champions: Anika Desai (Girls) & Vedav Varadarajan (Boys)

Division III Individual Champions: Maya Sanaba (Girls) & Tanuj Lalwani (Boys)

Division IV Individual Champions: Akriti Bhargava (Girls) & Anthony Shek (Boys)

Division V Individual Champions: Marcos Wille (Boys)

The day ended with much to be proud of for the champions and smiles and applauses from the rest of us. It had been a good day and we all knew it! In the words of some of the parents:

Mr. R: “I am very impressed with the way the event was planned and executed… a lot of people obviously put in a lot of hard work to make it happen… the enthusiasm of the kids was great to see!”

Mr. AK: “Congratulations on a fantastic organization of the Sports event today. Having gone to a number of these events now, I can vouch for the best organized and executed event. Thank you for showing us parents a good time.”

Mrs. RS: “this was a superbly organized Sports Day. Everything was executed seamlessly; everyone seemed to know what they were doing. The children were in great physical form. I especially liked the drills and band display. They were visual cues to how much the school has matured in the last few years.”
